This kaleidoscope, known as ‘Neo Max’, was made by the now-closed Gemini Kaleidoscope Company and is copyrighted ©1989 Peter Max, paying homage to his graphic art in kaleidoscopic form. It features Max's iconic
cosmic art motifs including sun rays, stars, smiling profiles, sailboats, and zooples.
Note: according to The Max Collector website, these kaleidoscopes were made in a limited edition of only 500.
We cannot verify this fact but regardless, it is a scarce piece of Peter Max memorabilia.
The kaleidoscope is accompanied by its original protective storage tube. Both kaleidoscope and tube are made of cardboard covered in glossy paper, while the kaleidoscope’s lenses are made of plastic.
The kaleidoscope works great: when rotated, the color elements change in colors very evocative of a Peter Max painting or poster (please see accompanying photos; two were taken through the kaleidoscope lens to show some of the many colors and patterns).
The outer tube and the kaleidoscope itself are in good condition and appear to have been little used. Colors are vibrant. There are minor scuffs to the kaleidoscope and tube from storage, and a light scratch above the “N” in “Neo” (please see photo).
The kaleidoscope measures approximately 8 3/4 inches long x 1 3/4 inches in diameter at the wide end. The outer tube is approximately 9 1/2 inches long x 2 1/8 inches in diameter.
Please note: white “ghosts” in the pictures are from glare on the glossy cardboard, an artifact of the photography, and not from stains or damage. The white spot on one end of the tube (please see photo) is the dried-out remnant of a sticker, likely the price tag.
