Description
This is a antique Italian wood carved cherub candelabra used in the 1949 20th Century Fox movie: "House of Strangers" starring Edward G. Robinson, Richard Conte and Susan Hayward. Debra Paget, Lou Adler, Paul Valentine, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Hope Emerson, Esther Minciotti and others were co-stars.NOTE: I called this a PROP, but believe it should be called a SET DRESSING. As shown in a photo, a number has been painted under the base to identify it. Plus "20-C Fox" is painted below that number/letter.
The entire piece stands at a little bit over 2 foot 3 inches tall or 27 inches tall.
The "Cherub" is around 1 foot 4 inches tall or 16 inches tall (from head to bottom of circular base)
There were two "Cherubs" on the fireplace mantel in the movie. Both were different as they were carved in opposite poses holding the torcheres.
The one you will receive is the one behind Mr. Robinson as pictured in this listing.
The OTHER "Cherub" I discovered years later while "antique" hunting was extensively damaged. It was missing the "torch" arm and torch plus the entire gold gilt elaborate base. You will receive a picture I took of it. I didn't buy this broken one. The photo you will receive is 3" x 5".
Another photo: You will also receive an original studio 8" by 10" still. In this picture is Edward G. Robinson and others plus you can see the cherub behind them.
Condition: There are many blemishes, and scuffs on this piece. The arm was re-attached at one point. The torchere appears to be loose, but is not. some of the wood flame tips have broken off. I do not know the real age of this piece. Since the movies creation, it's 71 years old. However it certainly is older since they didn't carve the cherub candelabras for the movie.
NOTE: Edward G. Robinson won THE BEST ACTOR at the Cannes Film Festival for his role in "House of Strangers".
