    Description

1908 WASHINGTON FRANKLIN #344 SCHERMACK TYPE III CONTROL PERFIN 0
Pattern 0 was the original 9 hole pattern offered by Schermack.  All other  patterns are based on this basic pattern
Nice large copy.  Known with several users as this was the demo. Eventually the assigned user was Spencer Trask & Co, investment banker from New York
Schermack Mailing Machines were used by high volume mailers of the day. Stamps were supplied in coils of 3000 and the machine applied stamps to envelopes at a rate of up to 250 per minute.
Control perfins were requested by many of the New York companies using Schermack Mailing Machines for a brief period, late 1909 until early 1911.  The control perfin die was added to identify the user and discourage employee stamp pilfering. They are quite scarce and a very interesting subset to collect.
